BlackBerry Looking At Phablets To Regain Lost Market Share?

In a recent interview, BlackBerry CEO, John Chen reveals that the company may be working on a phablet device.

 

It has been a slide that has been consistent for Blackberry over the years, from being a market leader to the bottom of the table and now in an attempt to revive the sagging fortunes, the smarphone maker may well be looking at phablets. 

In an interview with the Jakarta Post BlackBerry CEO, John Chen indicated that the company was considering designing a phablet to help regain some long lost market share.

The company recently launched its Z3 smartphone which was a budget device built specifically for the Indonesian market. The device was aimed at bringing the BlackBerry experience to the masses in a budget package making it affordable for everyone to jump on to BBM bandwagon. Beyond that there is no news about the BlackBerry preparing a new handset apart from what we have today.

“If we will do another thing, we will probably go to phablet. I think if you look at our strategy and if you look at where the market goes, there is definitely a good market for something between a phone and tablet,…” said BlackBerry CEO John Chen in the interview.

It was just recently that John Chen told Bloomberg that the company would not mind shutting down its mobile phone business in the pursuit of profits. Things seem to appearing that way since the struggling smartphone maker has not launched a new smartphone since the Z30 was announced in September 2013. Looks like BlackBerry will now focus all its efforts on building one phablet-sized device for the international market instead of building many mid-range devices to keep its profits in check.

Just a few weeks ago, the company launched a new enterprise version of BBM dubbed e-BBM, which will be available for corporates and businesses later this month; showing its increased focus on the software side of things.
