dishtv Launches truHD+
Claims to enable "unlimited recording".
With almost every DTH operator offering a Set Top Box (STB) with recording functionality, someone had to come up with something better. dishtv seems to have taken up the gauntlet and brought out the Dish truHD+, with seemingly unlimited recording capacity. This is possible because instead of the traditional DVR STBs with hard drive inside, this one has a USB port to connect any USB flash drive or hard drive to take up the responsibility of recording storage. This will let subscribers create an entire library of their favourite soaps and other television programmes as they can keep on changing to newer external storage devices as they become full.
The problem with the earlier methods was that recording was limited by the internal hard drive capacity of the STB. This tends to fill up really fast and more so when it comes to HD videos. However, with external storage, the storage capacity cap is done away with. Whether the captured content will still be stored in an encrypted format will be known only once we receive a review unit.
The new STB comes with all the features pertaining to HD and DVR STBs. DVR (Digital Video Recorder) features include record, rewind, forward, pause live TV, and event-based as well as time-based recording. It offers high quality 1080i videos in 16:9 aspect ratio with 5.1-channel surround sound. It claims to use the latest MPEG4 technology to minimise compression-related losses.
The Dish truHD+ is available at just Rs 2700, which is the same as a standard HD STB and half the price of a DVR HD STB. This is inclusive of one month Dish truHD Royale Pack and a 4 GB USB flash drive to get you started.
