Phones Could Soon Project 3D Holograms With A $30 Chip

Given that the company achieves its cost targets, we could see holographic smartphones as early as 2015 end.

 

The future of 3D image projection on mobile devices looks bright, and thanks to California-based startup Ostendo, the day when your phone could project floating 3D holograms may not be far.

 

Ostendo has created the first holographic chip that's small enough to fit on a smartphone, and isn't any bigger than current smartphone camera modules. This means manufacturers won't have to sacrifice sleek designs, but will have to find a way to justify to customers the added expense of such a feature.

 

The company refers to the technology as quantum photonic imaging, which it has been working on since 2007. The chip comprises of stacked layers of laser emitting diodes, and Ostendo is aiming to take the pixel density up to a massive 5,000 ppi.

Ostendo says they plan to have perfected the quantum photonic imaging chip by 2015, which means we could start seeing smartphones with 3D holographic projection capabilities by the end of 2015 or beginning of 2016. The icing on the cake is however the cost of the chip, which Ostendo says will be around $30.

 

To put that into perspective, a high quality camera module in today's smartphones costs about half that, meaning it shouldn't burn a huge whole in your pockets. It wouldn't be surprising to see at least a few Android phone manufacturers going in for Ostendo's technology, given that they hit the price point and functionality.
