Oppo Goes The Sony Way With Its N1 Mini
'Mini' does not necessarily mean compromise; as Sony had clearly shown with its Xperia Z1 Compact.
Oppo had recently announced its Mini version of the Oppo Find 7 unusually named as the R6007 and now has announced the smaller version of N1, calling it N1 Mini.
The R6007 handset came with some pretty impressive mid-range specifications and the looks to go with it. Well, in the case of the N1’s successor, the N1 Mini, Oppo clearly did not want to compromise on build quality and hardware.
This shows with the just announced price tag of the N1 which is a steep 2699 Yuan (approx. Rs. 26,000) for the mini version of an older flagship.
The device is rumoured to come with a 5 inch 1280 x 720 pixel display powered by a 1.6 GHz octa-core processor and a 13MP camera. Compare this to what the HTC One Mini 2 offers, and you will realise that the price tag fits in pretty well. You get all of the above and the stunning construction, quality and design that came with original N1 flagship.
Manufacturers normally design a ‘mini’ version of a phone to deliver the look and feel of the premium flagship at a low price. Mini versions of flagship devices however end up with hardware compromises and will often cancel out important high-end features in an effort to cut costs.
Sony was the game changer here. The Japanese electronics giant took a bold step by introducing mini version of its flagship device and showed the world that a ‘mini’ need not refer to compromise. The Xperia Z1 Compact was a powerful handset that included everything its elder sibling came with in a smaller package. Sony clearly understood that there were indeed buyers looking out for phones that did not have the massive displays but just wanted a good user experience.
Big does not necessarily mean better. And we guess that Oppo should change the name of its device to the Oppo N1 Compact instead, to make things clearer.
