Apple And Google Sign A Peace Treaty; Put An End To Patent Wars
The fight will now move out of the courtrooms and into the marketplace, a win for everyone including consumers.
Patent trolls and the long legal battles that follow have become part and parcel of the tech world. Industry leaders Apple and Google have locked horns many a time over the use of each others intellectual property, but now in a landmark move have declared sort of a ceasefire.
The two companies have signed an agreement to settle all outstanding patent litigation between them. Being leaders in the smartphone space, their movement should go a long way in de-escalating the patent wars that have marred the industry over the past few years.
“Apple and Google have agreed to dismiss all the current lawsuits that exist directly between the two companies,” said the two companies in a joint statement. “Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform.”
The move comes soon after second version of the Apple v/s Samsung legal battle came to an end in the Californian court. Many (including Samsung) viewed the case as a proxy-war which Apple was targeting Google's Android operating system, which ended in the Samsung having to pay $119.6 million.
Apple and Google working to settle their differences will come as a sigh of relief to the rest of the tech community. Instead of blowing up large sums of money on hiring patent lawyers and perusing legal action against each other, the two companies will now be able to re-direct these finances to better products.
Under the leadership of Steve Jobs, Apple was adamant to put Google's Android out of business as they believed it was a complete rip-off of their own product. Now however, a shift in ideology under Tim Cook should take the battle out of the courts and into the marketplace.
