Rumour: Apple's Upcoming iPhone 6 Will Not Feature A FHD Display

At least one of the two rumoured devices will sport a sharper 1704 x 960 pixel display.

Apple will supposedly launch the next iteration of its iPhone in two different display sizes later this year. While there has been much debate on the size, there hasn't been any news on the resolution, until now.

According to 9to5mac at least one of the next-generation iPhones will ship with a display resolution of 1704 x 960 pixels, up from the 1136 x 640 resolution that the current 5s and 5c come with. This could be Apple's answer to manufacturers who're already pushing the envelope of the 1080p display.

Even if both the versions of the iPhone 6 end up using screens with similar resolution, the estimated pixel density will be well within Apple's definition of a retina display. Moreover, since the aspect ratio will remain to be 16:9, black bands on the screen won't be an issue as was seen when the iPhone 5 was launched.

With iOS 8 slated for launch along with the iPhone 6, we could see sharper icons and other such small changes as no drastic redesign of the UI is expected. App developers will have to quickly roll out updates however, as graphics could get a bit pixelated with increase in resolution.

It is still unclear when the iPhone 6 will be launched, but most rumours suggest a staggered launch, with the smaller device coming in August while the larger one will be launched in September. The higher resolution should complement the increase in screen sizes, and will help Apple compete with both medium and large size Android phones.
