Facebook Follows Delhi Court Order

Submits compliance report after removing "anti-religious" and "anti-social" content.

 

Facebook has filed its compliance report before the Delhi court, which had passed an order directing 22 social networks to filter out objectionable content. Google India had also informed the court that it had removed objectionable webpages, as specified by the petitioner Mufti Aijaz Arshad Qasmi. However, Facebook, Yahoo!, and Microsoft have claimed that the order does not apply to them.

Meanwhile, the petitioner has been asked to provide copies of all the documents produced to the concerned parties. On 20th December last year, the court had issued an ex-parte summons to 22 social networking websites, asking them to remove "anti-religious" or "anti-social" content that could hurt religious sentiments. These websites included Facebook, Google India, Orkut, YouTube, Blogspot, Microsoft, Zombie Time, Exboii, Boardreader, IMC India, My Lot, Shyni Blog, and Topix, among others.

The move comes close on the heels of the government releasing prosecution orders against 21 internet firms for carrying "provocative content". This makes me wonder; whatever happened to free speech?
