Oppo Launches It Budget Smartphone Joy In India At Rs 8,990

With some typical entry-level smartphone specs, will the Joy be able to take on the Moto E?

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has announced the launch of the Joy, its cheapest handset in India, at a price of Rs 8,990. The dual SIM phone sports some pretty typical low-end specifications, but more importantly runs ColorOS based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

The Joy features a 4-inch WVGA display (480x800 pixels) which comes with a nano surface coating that according to Oppo allows the phone to be used with wet hands or gloves. The phone is powered by a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM.

Imaging duty is handled by a 3MP primary camera at the rear and a 0.3MP (VGA) front-facing shooter. While internal storage is a lowly 4GB, but it can be expanded to a maximum of 32GB via a microSD card slot.

In terms of features, the phone features something called Hotknot that supposedly allows for faster and more secure file transfer without taxing the 1,700 mAh battery too much. Apart from this the Joy offers users the option to back up photos, contacts and SMS messages onto the 5GB of free O-cloud storage, Oppo's proprietor cloud storage service.

"Industry reports predict that India is poised to emerge as the third largest smartphone market in the world by 2017 with a major proportion of the buyers being new users. There is a scarcity of affordable smartphones with high-end features in India,” said Tom Lu, CEO of Oppo, in a Times of India report.

With the launch of the Joy, Oppo currently has five smartphone models on sales in India, with plans to expand that number to 10 by the end of 2014. The company currently sells its phones in 12 major cities of India, but with entry-level models like the Joy will be looking to enter smaller cities and towns.

Oppo is now looking to expand its network by targeting multi-brand retail outlets, channel partners, small format shops and even setting up self-branded stores. It also plans to setup over 200 service centers in India over the next one year.
