Popular Automate-Your-Life Service 'IFTTT' Comes To Android
The app ties together popular internet services and core OS functions, making for some time saving functions.
Popular automate-your-life service IFTTT (If This, Then That) has made its official debut on the Android Play Store, offering deeper integration with the OS than its iOS counterpart.
The principal behind the app is tying together various supported internet services and core OS components to basically do things automatically. Building 'Recepies' as they are called, can make for some pretty clever and ultimately time saving functions.
For example, if you receive an email with an attachment, the app can automatically forward that to Dropbox or Google Drive. When the weather forecast makes for rain tomorrow, you could have a notification sent to your phone. The app can even use GPS data to do a whole host of things when you enter or leave a set area.
The arrival of IFTTT on Android has come after a long wait, with the company's CEO Linden Tibbets acknowledging that it was due to a lack of resources. Moreover, the app for Android has all the features present in its iOS counterpart, and then some. This has been made possible by the operating systems openness when it comes to allowing apps gain access to core OS functions.
“Android apps have much deeper access to device level functions like volume, WiFi, and wallpaper images. You can also do really cool things around your phone call and SMS logs,” says Tibbets, in a Tech Crunch report. “Android also gives developers a number of useful hooks, called intents, that allow for running a process in the background right after an event happens, like taking a photo.”
While it may initially seem like a daunting task to build your own 'Recepies', given the multitude of 'Triggers' and 'Actions' available, you can always try out something someone else has made. With popular and trending channels to see what Recepies already exist, it's pretty easy to find something perfect for you.
