Sony Brings Its Background Defocus App To Google’s Play Store

With a lens-blur like feature, Sony makes the flagship-centric app available for all Xperia smartphones.

Sony seems to be learning a lot; learning a lot from Nokia that is. It recently bought its Sony Keyboard to the Google Play Store; and now it seems it’s time for something bigger. Sony has finally launched Its Background Defocus app on Google’s Play Store.

The Background Defocus app was earlier exclusive only to the recently announced Sony Xperia Z2. Now Sony just like Nokia is bringing its premium software features to older devices. The app is said to run on most of Sony’s older Xperia range (albeit with a limited pixel count) and delivers an SLR-like background defocus effect.

It’s fairly simple to use as well. You open the Background Defocus app. Tap on the subject you want to keep in focus in the viewfinder and then tap the camera key to take the photo. After that you immediately get an option to change the level of blur in defocused area and then hit ‘save’.

Oh yes, the app does have its limitations because not all of Sony’s mobile phone lenses are the same. Sony says that the best results can be obtained by focussing on an object which is at least 15-45cm away. Also you will need to make sure that the background object is about 5 meter away from focus target as well. The app is currently available for Xperia devices that support Android version 4.2 and higher only.

Nokia had done a similar exercise some time back. The Nokia Pro Cam app was exclusive only to the Lumia 1020 but was later pushed out to other Nokia devices as the Nokia Camera app.
