Apple Posts A Mixed Q2 Report: iPhone Sales Grow, But The iPad Suffers

We still don't know how well the colourful iPhone 5c performed in comparison to the 5s.

Apple has just posted its Q2 2014 earnings report, and there are a few major takeaways in terms of device sales numbers. As expected the company registered a substantial growth in iPhone sales during the quarter, however the iPad suffered quite badly.

The company reported a 16.8 per cent increase in sales of the iPhone during Q2 of 2014 when compared to the corresponding quarter last year. iPhone sales jumped to 43.7 million units during the quarter as against the 37.4 million units shipped in Q2 of 2013. The biggest contributor to this growth is thought to be Apple's tie up with China Mobile, bringing the iPhone 5s and 5c to a consumer base of 750 million subscribers.

Apple did not however break-up sales of the iPhone between the various models that were sold, not giving us a clear picture of how many takers were there for the colourful 5c.

Apart from iPhone, the company announced that it shipped close to 20 million units of its Apple TV, while sales of the iPod during the quarter were half of what they were in Q2 of 2013. This doesn't come as a surprise, as Apple's newer iPhone and iPad have been eating into sales of the music player for long, bringing up questions of when the company will scrap it.

The biggest surprise however came with the announcement of a 16 per cent drop in sales of the iPads. Apple managed to sell 16.4 million iPads in Q2, which is a far cry from the nearly 20 million units of the device the company shipped in the same quarter last year. The simple reason for this lack of enthusiasm from buyers is because Apple hasn't released any new iPad models since it launched the iPad Air and Mini last year.

Moreover, it hasn't been like there has been a lack of high-end tablet launches from other manufacturers, which could have adversely affected the iPad sales. Some have already argued that most of the people who would buy an iPad already have one, and Apple isn't doing anything to bring aboard a new set of buyers.

Despite the many shortcomings, Apple's CEO Tim Cook was adamant about the devices success. He stated that the iPad was the fastest growing product in the company's history, and thorough his speech kept iterating several times that new features were coming to the device.
