Facebook Will Soon Force Users To Install The 'Messenger' App To Send/Receive Messages

The Facebook-haters group just got a hoard of new recruits.

 

Facebook has announced that users will no longer be able to send and receive messages through its main smartphone app, instead requiring them to install the social media giant's standalone 'Messenger' app.

 

The company so far has notified users in France, England and other European countries, that within a few weeks they would be required to install Facebook Messenger in order to send and receive messages.

 

Eventually Facebook will require users in all countries to install its Messenger app, said Derick Mains, a company spokesperson, though he did not divulge on a specific timeframe. The move is intended at delivering a consistent high-quality experience to users, which is only possible through its standalone messaging app.

 

"We have built a fast and reliable messaging experience through Messenger and now it makes sense for us to focus all our energy and resources on that experience," the company said in a statement.

 

The Messenger app is faster than the messaging service built into the Facebook primary smartphone app. Users also get access to more features such as making voice calls, and not to mention the more intuitive messaging experience that the standalone app brings.

 

Facebook Messenger is one among the more popular messaging apps available today, and competes with the likes of WhatsApp, Line and SnapChat. Recently the company announced that it would buy WhatsApp for a sum of $19 billion, further strengthening its position as a communication giant of the future.

 

Forcing users to install the standalone messaging app might help Facebook boost its popularity, but there have already been some repercussions. Users have begun deeming the move as heavy-handed, while many began posting critical comments on Twitter.

 

In the end, Facebook is slowly beginning to offer standalone apps for the many things it offers. Recently the company also launched its 'Paper' app which offers a new experience when it comes to consuming news. Currently Paper is only available for iOS devices.
