Tata Owned Land Rover Shows-Off Its 'Invisible Bonnet' Technology

Lets just hope its not so 'invisible' that we completely forget that the front of the car even exists.

British car manufacturer Land Rover, now owned by India's Tata Motors, has unveiled a revolutionary technology that could make driving (especially off-road driving) a lot easier, by literally allowing the driver to see through opaque bits such as the bonnet.

The pioneering technology which is still in an infant stage uses a heads-up-display (HUD) mounted on the dashboard, along with cameras mounted on the grille of the car. The feed from the cameras is then projected on the HUD making the front of the car virtually invisible to the driver.

The sort of see-through image that the driver is presented with could be of utmost use when traversing over rough terrain or even when navigating a tight parking spot in the city. Moreover, the augmented reality view does not just display terrain ahead, but also the angle and position of the front wheels – a highly useful feature when driving on a rocky terrain.

"We believe the next 25 years will be the most exciting and dynamic the automotive industry has ever experienced. There will be huge strides in environmental innovation, in safety and capability,” said Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology at Jaguar Land Rover.

The Transparent Bonnet technology as it has come to be known, will be officially unveiled at the New York International Auto Show on 16th April 2014. Also showcased at the event will be the Discovery Vision Concept, upon which the new & futuristic Land Rover Discovery will be built.
