HTC One (M8) Finally Goes Official… Well, At Least What’s Left Of It!
Gets impressive upgrades with the standout Duo Camera. But we already knew that right?
It has probably been one of the most talked about phones in recent times, with video reviews and what not leaking ahead of its launch. Yes, we are talking about the much-awaited HTC One (M8), and It’s finally here.
Most notable, is the phone's 5 inch Full HD 1080 x 1920 LCD (441 ppi) display, which now includes the navigation buttons at the bottom, doing away with the soft-touch buttons. On the Inside there's a fresh piece of silicon - a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, clocked at 2.5 GHz (for Asia) with a Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU. There are two options for in-built memory: 16 GB and 32 GB, with the option to expand storage up to 128 GB via a micro SD card slot. Both variants come with 2 GB of RAM.
The body of the new HTC One is more rounded around the edges when compared to its predecessor, and comes in three colours - Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold. The finish of the phone’s body has changed as well and is now a sexy brushed aluminium. This time around HTC seems to have made the One out of 90% metal.
Enough about the body, let’s move on to the next biggest talking point of the One, its camera. HTC has retained the 4 MP ultra-pixel shooter, but it now features a 1/3-inch sensor with pixel size standing at 2-micron and a wide f/2.0 aperture. Output from the second camera will never be visible on the screen but will simply be used for calculating the depth of field; information that will later be useful for image enhancements such as focus shift.
The Duo Camera supposedly makes for quicker focus lock-on, a region where phonemakers are really pushing the boundaries these days. HTC claims that the new One can lock focus as quickly as 0.3 seconds, which is pretty quick if you ask us.
Sadly the camera loses OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) instead opting for digital stabilisation to get the job done. An idea that seems to have been borrowed from Apple is the dual LED flash - One warm LED and one cold LED to achieve the perfect white balance when shooting in different settings.
The 2600 mAh battery of the HTC One (M8) is definitely smaller compared to the rest of the flagships launched this year, but thanks to software optimisations 30 hours of standby uses up just 10% of the battery's juice.
An interesting range of accessories was also announced at the HTC One (M8) launch. The much talked about Dot View case shows you notifications via the holes in the plastic cover on the front, but will display notifications only from native applications for now.
The HTC One (M8) will be available in India next month but there are no specifics on the price just yet.
