Twitter Clarifies Censorship Stand
Outcry after website says it will "withhold specific content" country-wise.
With Twitter having decided to censor tweets, people using the online medium to voice their opinions haven't taken too kindly to the move. On Sunday, tweeters called for a protest with the hashtag #TwitterBlackout, asking users to boycott the service. However, a subsequent update to the original post makes the micro-blogging website's stand a bit clearer. Taking their transparency policies ahead, the website has partnered with Chilling Effects to help users find Twitter-related legal notices with ease.
The blog post specifies, "Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country while keeping it available in the rest of the world. We have also built in a way to communicate transparently to users when content is withheld, and why".
However, this filtering will not happen in real-time, as over a billion tweets go live every four days. In its update, the website adds, "...filtering is neither desirable nor realistic. With this new feature, we are going to be reactive only: that is, we will withhold specific content only when required to do so in response to what we believe to be a valid and applicable legal request".
With the micro-blogging website getting active as far as data monitoring is concerned, such censorship in India doesn't seem so far-fetched after all.
