Sony Brings Themes Back In Fashion

Themes change up to 280 UI elements including the navigation bar.

 

Sony has finally let loose the Xperia Themes feature and the long-awaited mobile skinning feature is now available for download. Themes are available for a wide variety of devices that must have Android Jelly Bean Version 4.3 and above.

Sony has been very particular about their UI lately and this has shone through when the recent updates were delivered to their new range of Xperia devices. The priority was to give the user a simpler yet, performance oriented UI that would also include the theming features that Sony’s (Ericsson’s feature phones) were known for in the good old days.

There was a massive theme community back then, but as soon as Sony switched to Android, all of that somehow fizzed out. Andreas Schön, one of the brains behind Xperia Themes said that theming was incredibly popular back then (with feature phones) and that Sony wanted to give that experience back to its users and fans. He also mentioned that the current theming setup for android are pretty non-existent. Users need to download an additional launcher which would somehow make the whole process quite the task.

Xperia Themes makes things a lot simpler for Sony owners. All they have to do is click on the themes button and select from a set of pre-installed ones. Or one can simply click on the ‘+’ on the top right hand corner and download new themes made exclusively by Sony from the Play Store / Sony Select.

Currently, the elements that can be changed are listed below:

  • Wallpaper for the home screen and lock screen
  • Components like navigation bar icons, checkboxes, switches, sliders and buttons

Sony in the future, also plans to increase the number of elements and apps that can be skinned with Xperia Theme.
Xperia Themes will surely set Sony apart from the rest of the Android herd since the only other manufacturer that offers such a level of customisation out of the box is Xiaomi (running MIUI V5). Again Xiaomi handsets are only available in China and now recently begun selling in Singapore.
