TRAI Selectively Waives 200-SMS Limit
Restriction out for service providers, but remains in effect for individuals.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to exempt machine-to-machine and person-to-machine messages from the 200-SMS-per-day-per-SIM limit. The decision was taken after business houses and other stakeholders claimed that the restriction would interfere with their normal functioning. TRAI Advisor A Robert J Ravi announced in a statement, "TRAI has duly considered such representations and has excluded all machine to machine and person to machine messages from the limit of 200 SMS per day per SIM. Such services include providing details of driver or taxi on booking of Radio Taxi, tentative date of delivery of goods, tentative date of attending complaint, contact details of person attending the complaint etc".
TRAI had earlier implemented this restriction as a 100-SMS limit since 27th September last year, but later increased it to 200, which continues to remain in effect for individuals. This doesn't really make sense, as the purpose of the regulation was to curb spammers rather than private users.
