Nokia Sells Over 1.5 Billion S40 Phones

Achieves milestone with sale of latest S40-based Asha 303.

 

Nokia has sold over 1.5 billion Series 40 (S40) phones worldwide. Call it a coincidence or clever marketing, it was the company's latest S40 flagship, Asha 303, that was the 1.5 billionth device to be sold. In another "coincidence", the handset was bought by Mayara Rodrigues, a photogenic customer from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The S40 debuted in 1999 with the launch of the 7110 (the company's first phone with a WAP browser). Needless to say, the platform's evolution has been pretty impressive. The latest devices now sport a 1 GHz CPU, full-fledged browser, navigation features, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Little wonder then that Nokia has started referring to S40 as a "Smartphone Lite" OS. As far as I'm concerned, it's not a smartphone platform until they add multitasking support.

Recently, the Finnish giant has acquired the Norway-based Smarterphone OS, which is known for delivering a smartphone-like interface to low-end phones. It will be interesting to see how this acquisition will affect the company's The Next Billion strategy and further development of the S40 platform.
