Agni-IV To Be Showcased on Republic Day
Nuclear-capable missile is India's prime tactical deterrent.
India will flex its military muscle at its 63rd Republic Day parade tomorrow. This year's star attraction will be the nuclear-capable Agni-IV strategic missile. This will be the first time that the general public will be able to get a glimpse of the most technologically advanced and potent missile in India's arsenal. The Agni-IV is a fourth-generation rocket that was successfully tested in November 2011. It's capable of carrying a 1-tonne warhead and striking targets as far away as 2500 to 3500 km. Equipped with state-of-the-art navigational and guidance technologies and a composite rocket motor, this solid propellant powered, two-stage missile can be fired even from a mobile launcher (not your regular Android, though). The missile is 20 metres long and weighs 17 tonnes.
DRDO spokesperson Ravi Kumar Gupta said that the parade contingent will also have the Prahaar missile and the Rustom-I. The Prahaar is an advanced short-range, high-speed, guided missile, capable of hitting targets situated 150 km away with pinpoint accuracy. The Rustom-I is a medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV, capable of taking off and landing like a conventional aircraft. This drone can fly for 12-15 hours at 250 kmph, carrying out reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, and battlefield damage assessment tasks. The parade can be watched live, as mentioned in our other story.
