Sapphire coating is nothing new in the world or wrist watches. They have been used for quite some time on the glass faces of the high-end timepieces, making them almost scratch-proof even after years of usage.

But at what cost? Last year’s iPhone 5s reached Indian shores at a pretty steep price, making out of reach of most buyers. Yes, the iPhone 5C was supposed to drive sales in the mid-segment, but somehow lost out because nobody really preferred a plastic iPhone.

The company behind Apple's sapphire coating solution is GT Advanced. The company has raked in a huge $500-$700 million for the contract; and this is just the beginning. While the use of new materials will definitely make the iPhone last long, it will also burn a hole in your pocket.

All we can say is that start savings as much as possible (or simply break a bank) if you plan on buying the upcoming iPhone 6.
