37 Million iPhones Sold In Three Months

Continues to remain miles ahead of the competition.

The iPhone continues to shine, after reportedly selling 37 million units in the last three months of 2011. This is more than double the sales as that of the previous year. Apple had launched the iPhone 4S in US and other countries in October, followed by a phased launch in several other countries in the following month.

The iPhone accounts for over half of the company's revenues, with other successful products including the MacBook and iPad making up the rest. With these figures, Apple has consolidated its position as the world's largest maker of smartphones. Interestingly, Samsung had also announced a preliminary figure of 35 million devices during the same period, which could put it in direct competition for the pole position in the race. However, that is not the case, because the Korean electronics giant reports the number of phones "shipped" and not actual sales.

The iPhone 4S has been enjoying a growing popularity since its launch and this report bears testament to that fact. Competitors such as Nokia and BlackBerry have been experiencing a general decline in popularity, with the former being saved by the bell in the final part of the year thanks to its Lumias. With the iPhone's resurgence, analysts are now finding it hard to predict who will rule the smartphone market in 2012. Who do you think will it be?
