MWC 2014: Samsung Shifts Its Gear 2 In The Smartwatch Race
Samsung unveils Tizen-powered GALAXY Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.
Samsung has kicked-off this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) with smartwatches. South Korea’s biggest tech company showcased the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. The difference between these two gadgets is the lack of camera on the Neo, which is supposed to be a budget device. The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are essential companion devices, allow users to accept or ignore incoming calls and messages, and providing instant notification without having to take interact with their GALAXY smartphone.
Those not in the know, the Gear2 is a successor of Samsung’s last year’s wearable device that was released along with the Note 3. The company claims to have enhanced the products in its latest iteration. For instance, the Camera is now placed on a main body instead the strap. The straps are available in variety of colours including Charcoal Black, Gold Brown and Wild Orange for Gear2 and Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange for Gear2 Neo. It’s worth mentioning is that both the devices are IP67 Certified. In simple words, the Gear 2 and Neo are water resistant, much like Sony’s high-end Xperia phones.
Both the smartwatches feature a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor and a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen with pixel dimensions of 320 x 320. Additional features will allow users to control of their TV and music system using the IR sensor.
You may have noticed that these devices lack GALAXY branding. Rightly so, because they run Samsung’s homebrewed Tizen operating system. What’s interesting to see is whether Samsung limits its OS to wearables or it does have big handset plans.
