Delhi Autos To Be GPS-Enabled By March

One less reason for drivers to refuse a ride.

Come March, all three-wheeler scooter rickshaws on Delhi roads will go high-tech, with GPS navigation on board. The Delhi government has asked DIMTS (Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System), the agency in charge of the project, to enlist vendors who can supply GPS-enabled meters. The list is expected to be finalised in a month and a notification will then be issued to this effect.

A DIMTS official stated that these new meters with GPS will have a printer to print a receipt with the route and fare details when the destination is reached. Regarding the vendors enlisting process, he said, "We will have to issue a notice giving details of the specifications vendors need to meet. Their applications would then be evaluated by us and the entire process is likely to take 40 days. Auto-rickshaw owners can then get the GPS fitted from these authorized vendors".

Government sources said that rickshaw drivers will be given up to six months to install these new meters. It expects the existing 55,000 and new 45,000 rickshaws to have these devices by March. Let's hope that this process gets implemented pan India.
