Sony Might Release Vaio-Branded Windows Phone In 2014

TheInformation.com claims that Microsoft is slashing Licensing fees to attract OEMs.

A few years back, Sony decided to abandon its feature phone segment to concentrate on Android smartphones. While rolling out smartphones at regular intervals, the Japanese brand hasn't managed to challenge Samsung in terms of sales yet. Unlike HTC and Samsung, Sony has always kept a distance from Microsoft's mobile platform. However, if a report from Thenfromation.com is to be believed, Sony might soon jump on the Windows Phone bandwagon. This shouldn't come as a surprise since WP ecosystem is catching up with Android and iOS at a good pace. Moreover, it's said that the Redmond giant is slashing software licencing fees to attract OEMs.

Currently, the Finns hold over 92 percent marketshare in WP. Although Nokia's phones are good, its WP dominance is due to the lack of serious competition from Samsung and HTC who concentrate their efforts on Android. So if Sony's plans materialise, Nokia will get some fresh competition from Japan. Similar to the company's Windows-based products including laptops and hybrids, its phone might fall under Vaio brand. I personally think that the biggest roadblock in this alliance will probably be Microsoft's Windows Phone Xbox integration, which wouldn't bode too well with the PlayStation-maker.
