Rumour: Samsung To Launch Three-Sided Screen Phone In 2014

The portion of display covering the two sides could be used to display notifications or media controls.

Samsung is the key innovator when it comes to displays. Its success in the mobile space can be attributed to the quality OLED screens manufactured by the Koran giant. In January, the company unveiled its future plans by showing off YOUM concept. It was Samsung's breakthrough in flexible screen technology.

In the same year, the handset-maker launched its first commercialised curved screen phone, the GALAXY Round. While it featured a flexible screen, the actual handset is curved and rigid (you can't bend it). As you may already know, the the GALAXY Round sports a 5.7" concave screen. Now if a report from Bloomberg is to be believed, the company is readying the phone with a somewhat convex display. Sources close to Samsung told Bloomberg that the Korean brand "plans to release a Galaxy smartphone next year with a three-sided display that wraps around the edges so messages can be read from an angle...". They further added that each side of the display will operate independently. However, to make things readable on sides, the phone will have to be made thicker than what they currently are.

The rumoured phone is expected to belong to either the GALAXY S or Note series of smartphones. We can't rule out the possibility seeing a brand new series. Obviously, there's nothing concrete about it's launch date, but Bloomberg is pegging it at second half of 2014.
