Samsung Plans Curvy Displays For Smartphones
Dangerous curves ahead.
Much after the fanfare of Note 3 and Gear Smartwatch, Samsung has unveiled plans to release curved glass display smartphones, at Seoul in a media event.
Samsung's mobile business head of strategic marketing DJ Lee said,“We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October", as reported by Reuters.
Curved displays are already available on OLED TVs, and claims to offer more immersive experience. But how much of that is true for a smartphone, remains to be seen. It is unclear whether this is same as the much-rumoured prototype of flexible AMOLED screen at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2011. Way back Samsung Nexus S, was actually the first so-called “Contour Display” smartphone, albeit gimmicky.
The current price of curved display technology is expensive, just like all new technologies. Samsung is currently researching on how to mass-produce parts cheaply, and come up with displays that can be as thin as a sheet and highly heat resistant all at the same time.
