iPhone 5S Unveiled With A Futuristic Fingerprint Identity Sensor

Apple's flagship phone packs in an A7 chip and improved camera.

 

Tim Cook took the stage at Cupertino to unveil the latest iteration of the iPhone. As expected, the iPhone 5S sports a 4" screen. It’s good to see Apple keeping away from the mad-rush of releasing large screen phones. Now before unleashing the technical mumbo-jumbo, let us tell you that the latest iPhone looks almost identical to its predecessor. However, it does come in the new “precious” gold hue. Interestingly, the iPhone 5S comes with a fingerprint identity sensor called Touch ID. Thanks to this technology, you can unlock your phone by simply placing your thumb on the Home button. So now there’s no way strangers can access your iPhone (unless your phone thief turns into Angulimal, and well, collects your precious finger).

The iPhone 5S comes with a spanking new A7 chipset, which is claimed to be twice as powerful compared to its predecessor, theA6. According to Apple, it’s also the first 64-bit processor ever used in a smartphone. Leveraging on its performance, you can expect console-grade graphics on the iPhone 5S. The A7 has also got a companion processor, the M7. It’s designed to free the primary processor from the computational work that is required to process motion data.

Apart from raw power, the new iPhone also comes with an improved camera. For starters, you get a 15% larger sensor as compared to the iPhone 5. The iPhone now comes with dual-LED flash. Apple also claims that the phone packs in Auto image stabilisation that reduces noise and motion from shaky hands or moving subjects. At this point, we’re not sure if it’s a hardware feature as seen on the top-end Nokia Lumia phones. Other camera features include Burst mode, Panorama, and multiple photo filters. The phone can record full-HD videos at 30 fps or HD videos at 120 fps.

The 16 GB variant of the iPhone 5S will cost $199 (around Rs 12,800); the 32 GB will be worth $299 (around Rs 19,200); whereas the 64 GB handset sports a $399 (around Rs 25,500) price tag in the US market. All variants will be available on two-year contracts, so these aren't across the counter retail prices.
