Meet Samsung’s Smartwatch: The GALAXY Gear

The GALAXY smartphone companion is expected to cost around Rs 20,000.

Samsung has introduced its much-anticipated smartwatch the GALAXY Gear. The watch sports a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen with pixel dimensions of 320x320. There’s a 1.9 megapixel strap-mounted camera with BSI sensor. It’s powered by an 800 MHz processor and has 512 MB of RAM. Since lag is the last thing you would want to experience on a watch, Samsung has ditched Android in favour of its own operating platform. According to Samsung, there will be 70 apps available at launch including Evernote, Line, eBay, MyFitnessPal, and RunKeeper.

The Gear works as a companion for high-end GALAXY devices running Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). At launch, it will only be compatible with new GALAXY Note 3. Other GALAXY series smartphones such as the S4 and Note II will be supported after the 4.3 software update. Once paired with a smartphones via bluetooth, the Gear can handle calls, SMS, S-Voice, and media playback.

The smartwatch boasts of metallic frame and plastic (non-removable) strap. The straps are available in Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green. The Gear looks quite good compared to Samsung phones. However, given its screen-size, Samsung should have used a curved front-glass to make it appear less blocky.

The Samsung GALAXY Gear will be launched in more than 140 countries around the world starting from September 25. Its price is expected to be around $300 (approx. 20,000).
