Oxford's Online Dictionaries Defines Phablets And Selfies
We live in a weird, whacked out world!
The World Wide Web is known to give rise to several monsters, and a lot of slang that finds it origins in pop culture (and social media). Every quarter (four months, for the uninitiated) Oxford dictionary's web aavatar, the Oxford Dictionaries Online adds such popular words, to enlighten the clueless. And as a standard practice few of these commonly used (and most repulsive) words made its usage clear. One look at the complete listing of terms that have made it to the quarterly-cut and you'll attribute social networking and mobile computing to over half of them. These include bitcoin, digital detox, emoji, BYOD, click and collect, FOMO, geek chick, hackerspace, Internet of things, MOOC, phablet, selfie, TL;DR, twerk, and unlike. If you didn’t already know what these mean (trust me you are not alone), head over here to find out what they mean and their word type (yes, these are categorised by usage as well).
See Morgan Freeman reading the definition of Twerking.
Looking at how words such as twerk (v.: dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance) is becoming popular from English speaking nations, like Bill Cosby describes in his book Fatherhood, there will soon be a time where you will end up "helping your children learn English as a second language", even though it is their mother-tongue. Thankfully, Indian politicians are forcing English to be our second language, else we could do better generating such crap. After all, we did make the over-sized phablet a trend!
Well the only saving grace in this entire episode is that these words will not be engraved in history to embarrass English language further: the ODO is different from OED (Oxford English Dictionary; the one which is officially printed). You can look at the main difference between the two here.
