Human 'Bheja-Fry' In A Petri Dish

Braaaiiinnsss!

Have you been accused of not having any brains? Have you tried eating Bheja-Fry masala, just to grow more brain? Don't worry, the empathetic scientists of Molecular Biotechnology see your 'Pain in Brain Drain' and have come up with a solution.

The solution may not be as brainy yet, as the researchers at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Vienna, Austria have grown a 3D, self-organising model of a developing human brain in the lab, using only stem cells. It is about 3 to 4 millimetres in size and resembles the tissue and functional organisational structure of a 9-week-old embryonic human brain.

The significance of this is that it can used to model neurological diseases, schizophrenia, autism, and the like in an actual human brain, rather than using an animal brain, which develops quite differently. (Now you know why Mutton-based Bheja fry masala doesn't work!)

The good thing is, even if this doesn't work out, we humans at least have one more way to survive a Zombie Apocalypse. For more brainy masala on the topic, check out Popular Science article on it.

Here's a video by New Scientist on the tadpole like brain.
