Microsoft Announces Windows 8.1 RTM

Also starts seeding Windows RT 8.1, general release will happen on 18th October.

Microsoft has readied Windows 8.1 and has started providing it to manufacturers, according to a press release. The RTM has come just 8 months after the original touch-based OS was launched last year, which is quite fast by Microsoft's standards. This is not a new OS, but rather the update is similar to how the company used to release Service Packs for previous versions of Windows. Therefore, current users of Windows 8 will get it as an update, while those who buy it later will get Windows 8.1, which means that the update will come integrated into the retail OS. Although it has been made available to manufacturers, the general users and even MSDN and TechNet subscribers will have to wait till 18th October when it will be available for free download.

There are a lot of new features that will be part of this new update in addition to the Start Button and Boot To Desktop. However, it will take more than that to rescue the dwindling PC and laptop market. That being said, Microsoft can now adapt to the changing times and focus on the tablet market segment with this updated OS. Windows RT 8.1 has also been seeded to OEMs. It would seem to be a waste of time and resources for Microsoft to put in efforts for this beleaguered OS. On second thoughts, it may actually make sense to put in appealing features to make Windows RT attractive and feasible. This also makes business sense: Windows RT is actually better suited for tablets as it delivers an experience closely resembling the full Windows 8, and has less demanding hardware requirements, which should result in better battery life.
