Sony Slashes PS Vita Prices Down to $200
South-East Asia receives price cuts as well; no word on Indian pricing yet.
Sony has announced a price drop for the PlayStation Vita console at the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany. The price has been slashed to €200 (Rs 17,000 approx) in Europe. The US pricing has been revised to $200 (Rs 12,850 approx) for both the Wi-Fi (formerly $250) as well as 3G (formerly $300) models. This comes as no surprise, since we had already complained of the console being overpriced from the outset. The price cut and the announcement to release 150 new Vita-specific titles just might be the only way for Sony to move the hand-held system off the shelves.
Way back in February, Sony Japan had slashed the hand-held console's price down to 20,000 yen (Rs 13,000 approx), which was down from 30,000 yen for the 3G and 25,000 yen for the Wi-Fi model. Interestingly, Sony had declined to slash the US prices, but the local US brick-and-mortar game stores upped the ante by offering discounts of their own. The price cut isn't anything new for American gamers then.
The Japanese manufacturer has also slashed the prices of its overpriced proprietary memory cards for the console. The smallest (4 GB) Vita memory card now costs $15, which has been reduced from the exorbitant $20 price tag. The 8 GB has reduced a price cut of $10, where as the 16 GB and 32 GB versions have received a price drop of $20.
The price cut has also been applied to South-East Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. We have contacted Sony PlayStation India for clarity on whether India will receive a price revision as well, so watch this space for updates.
