Zuck's Profile Hacker Honoured By Internet Community

Good Karma always comes back!

 

It's always nice to know that someone has your back, or in this case Good Karma fervently returning, and that too from the unexpected source. Altruistically, the Internet community comes to the rescue of a Palestinian researcher/hacker, who was refused acknowledgement and prize money for pointing out a serious bug in Facebook.

As reported before, the serious bug let users post anything on anyone's Facebook wall, even without being on their friend list. Even after the security exploit was pointed out twice to Facebook's security team, it was ignored leading the well-intentioned hacker to hack Zuckerberg's profile to bring attention to the exploit. And attention it did bring, so much so that the poor hacker Khalil's account was temporarily blocked, and his bounty of $500 wasn't given for locating the hack.

But what no one knew was that the Internet Community had his back and got him much much more than measly $500. The community collected up to $10,565 in a matter of a day via the crowd sourcing site, Gofundme.com. The unique initiative was taken by Marc Maiffret, CTO of BeyondTrust, who set the ball rolling with $3,000 to encourage Khalil for future security research.

It's sad and silly that Facebook acted "Only according to its TOS rules", where it could have responded much more maturely; but at the same time it turned out to be in the favour of Khalil Shreateh and sent a huge message across the internet. Butterfly effect? Karma? Whatever it is, it's awesome! Good luck Khalil and a Big Thank You from 'All Facebook Users'.
