Rockstar Games had teased the online multiplayer component at the tail end of Grand Theft Auto V's single-player gameplay video showcasing three colourful characters wreaking mayhem in the fictional city of Los Santos. The GTA maker has now released a second gameplay video; this time focusing on the multiplayer component dubbed Grand Theft Auto Online. The multiplayer mode is a persistent online world that will be expanded over time through updates from the developer, in addition to user generated content.
While this may seem like the trappings of a massively multiplayer online game, the console versions are said to support only 16 players, whereas the PC ones will allow twice that number. The move could be speculated partly as deliberate attempt to avoid the entropy of hundreds of players descending onto a map like traditional MMO games, whereas the counter-argument could also be that the technical limitations of the console platform cannot allow a large number of players.
Taking a leaf from Red Dead Redemption, GTA Online allows complete character and car customisation, ability to buy property, and earn and reputation along the way to rise in the leaderboards. In addition to the traditional deathmatch modes, the multiplayer component lets you undertake all kinds of activities available in the single-player campaign and some more. This includes heists, co-op missions, gang attacks, and grand theft auto (of course). If you are the leisurely kind you also have activities such as golf, shooting range, base jumping and more ambient events that occur within the world.
The game is free and will be available along with the retail copy of GTA V. GTA online launches on 1st October. What's worth watching out here is the user generated content, which should be rather interesting.
