Apple Revises Developer Guidelines For Kids And Gambling Apps

Introduces stringent rules for apps belonging to these categories, apart from other minor updates.

Apple, in a bid to make its app store safer for kids and chronic gamblers has rolled out new set of guidelines for app developers. Tuaw.com reports that although the changes are minor, these two sections saw the most compelling restrictions of the lot. As per the revisions, apps that deal with real money should be have all the "necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the App is used", region locked, and free to download. It further adds, "Apps that use IAP to purchase credit or currency to use in conjunction with real money gaming will be rejected".

As for apps directed at children, the revision takes into account the US-based Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Apart from making the 13 year age limit a mandate in iOS 7, developers will not be allowed to collect names, addresses, telephone numbers, photographs, videos, or any other personal data from any minor. Also, developers will have to keep a check on user-centric ads, and that apps targeted at minors need seek for parental permission as far as in-app purchases are concerned. As you may have already noticed, iTunes has a "Offers In-App Purchases" warning for apps, a move that has stemmed from lawsuits in the US that resulted out of unauthorised in-app purchases.
