Microsoft Promises PC Compatibility For The Xbox One Controller
Official support will be implemented only by 2014.
The Xbox One controller will be coming to the PC next year. Zulfi Alam, General Manager of Xbox Accessories, told CVG that work is underway to integrate the brand new controller from the next-generation console for PC architecture. In what will come as a sigh of relief for most PC gamers, the Microsoft rep has promised backward compatibility with the Xbox 360 gamepad. This comes as a godsend for all console ports with poor keyboard/mouse implementations.
The long-winded road to the PC implementation has its share of reasons. Major revisions and additions to the core technology have resulted in a successor that entails a lot of tweaking around with the XInput architecture employed by the X360 controller. "New wireless protocol, combined with the ability to work in 'wired' mode, and the addition of features like Impulse triggers, means that new software has to be written and optimized for the PC", explains Alam citing the complexity of the backward compatibility process.
The Xbox One console will hit the store shelves in November 2014. Unfortunately, India will only see a release later next year. The controller, however, has been promised to be ported to the PC platform only by next year. The main concern we have with the gamepad is how the inclusion of added motors in the Impulse triggers will affect the battery life, which comes courtesy of two AA batteries. Having said that, the sublime combination of analogue precision and force feedback should make the Xbox One controller a godsend for racing games—now, on the PC as well.
