Update: WhatsApp Now Supports Voice Messaging

Messaging service's popularity jumps 20% in 2 months to 300 million users.

Update: Now already out on iOS and Android smartphones.

WhatsApp, the multi-platform messaging service plans to implement voice messaging very soon. At present, the service allows users to send text messages and files to each other. The popular free app that is available for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Symbian devices has experienced a big jump in its subscriber base from 250 million to 300 million in the past two months. Apps such as Viber and LINE already feature voice calling over mobile internet, but WhatsApp seems to be still taking baby steps in that direction and has chosen instead to incorporate voice messaging.

The 4-year old service currently handles over 31 billion messages per day globally. Users send 325 million photos every day. The new voice messaging feature, when available, will allow users a push-to-talk functionality similar to what is available in WeChat at present. The user needs to tap and hold the microphone icon to record the message and release it to send. He/she can slide the finger to cancel the recording. WhatsApp is scheduled to roll out the new feature in the next 24 hours.
