Jelly Bean Is Now The Most Popular Android Version On Smartphones
Mobile OS finally surpasses Gingerbread; leapfrogs ICS.
It is official! Jelly Bean is now the dominant Android version across the platform. The Android Developer website reports that 40.5 % of devices now have the mobile OS with version 4.1.x and 4.2.1. Gingerbread or version 2.3.x, which had enjoyed a majority on Android devices is no longer in the lead, but is at second position with its presence on 33.1% devices. Ice Cream Sandwich, which was supposed to be a big thing, stands at the third place with 22.5%, indicating that most device manufacturers preferred to let it pass in favour of the newer and better optimised version. Older OS versions are no longer relevant. The report takes into account the last 14 days up to 1st August.
Google has been drawing flak over fragmentation issues because of the various Android OS versions that coexist. This results in some devices not being able to properly run apps written using Android SDK due to the lack of optimisation for a particular version (or the optimisation for a single version). However, if you consider Android OS 4.x.x together, the fragmentation issue seems to be addressed correctly as there are 63% devices with this OS version, which is a good majority. Apple, on the other hand, has been less affected by this issue despite the existence of its various iOS versions. That's because it doesn't have too many device models, and also because it is known to make it obligatory for apps to set a minimum platform requirement, which filters off devices that may not be able to run a particular app well. Windows Phone, which has versions 7, 7.5, 7.8, and 8, is also not badly affected by fragmentation as reported earlier.
