FBI Resorts To Hacker Tactics For Spying On Suspects

Employs specialised tools that allows to remotely switch on microphones on Android smartphones.

From old school wiretaps to cellphone triangulation and surveillance, the FBI has apparently taken to a hacker approach towards, spying on US citizens. The US internal intelligence agency has been using tools generally employed by hackers such as spyware, malware, and trojans to garner evidence against suspects, according to a Wall Street Journal report. This revelation comes close on the heels of another US intelligence agency (NSA) being accused of spying on the citizens' phone and internet records, while cooperating with major Internet entities.

These hacking tools have allegedly been developed by the FBI over the past decade internally, whereas some have been purchased from the private security sector. Over the years, FBI has also hired hackers to write customised software and use their expertise with web-based surveillance. These tools range from simple packet sniffers to complicated ones that allow the bureau to activate microphones in Android smartphones. This information comes from a former official, employed in FBI's cyber division. Needless to say, both Google and the FBI have declined to comment on the issue.

The cyber spying route, however, is said to be carried under court orders, and only in cases where other conventional surveillance means fail. In fact, it's easier to get necessary warrants because this approach doesn't touch involve raiding the residence and physically accessing the suspect's computers. The former FBI official who spoke to the Journal, claimed that the method is restricted to those associated with child pornography, organized crime, or counterterrorism. Moreover, these tactics aren't used against hackers, not surprisingly owing to the fear of being exposed.
