Sony, Panasonic Team Up To Promise Huge Data Portability With 300 GB Optical Disks
New storage to be commercially available by the end of 2015.
CD-ROMs and DVDs, which have been the popular media for portable storage since a long time, have been pushed to obsolescence, thanks to high capacity memory sticks, USB flash drives, and hard drives. However, Sony and Panasonic seem to think otherwise. Both the companies have agreed upon creating disks with storage capacities of up to 300 GB. Earlier we have had Pioneer's Blu-ray disc topping 400 GB, but the prototype hardly made to the commercial market. Given the need for long term digital storage and archive capabilities, both corporations are eager to develop the next-gen professional-use optical discs.
Both Sony and Panasonic have backed this idea of creating high-capacity disks because optical drives are known to be dust and water resistant and store data reliably for long duration if kept in adequate enclosures. These then become an ideal choice for backing up huge amounts of data. Though targeted towards industries such as motion pictures and cloud storage, the technology is inbound for general consumers by the end of 2015.
