Samsung Officially Announces Specifications Of New Exynos 5 Octa Processor

The new SoC follows the ARM processor architecture.

 

Samsung has now officially launched the new Exynos 5 Octa SoC, which is based on the ARM architecture. The new Exynos 5 Octa (5420) uses an ARM Mali-T628 GPU. The South Korean manufacturer's older Exynos 5 Octa (5410) powers that Samsung GALAXY S4 that is currently available in India.

The new Exynos 5 Octa is said to nearly double the CPU's performance, as all the eight-cores of  the SoC comes with increased clock times, in comparison to the Exynos 5 Octa of the Samsung GALAXY S4. The new Exynos 5 Octa comes with a quad-core Cortex A15 (ARM) clocked at 1.8 GHz, and another quad-core Cortex-A7 have been clocked at 1.3 GHz. Samsung says both these set of cores follow ARM's big.LITTLE implementation.

The Exynos 5 Octa SOC works at a bandwidth of 14.9 GB per second, along with a dual-channel LPDDR3 clocked at 933 MHz, which Samsung says will lead to faster processing of data, and is also said to support full HD Wi-Fi display.

Other technical aspects about the new Samsung Exynos 5 Octa also reveal a full HD 60 fps video hardware codec, which should provide for up to 1080p video play back and recording. Support for graphic editors such as OpenGL ES 3.0 and Full Profile Open CL 1.1 are also provided in the latest Exynos 5 processor.

As of now, there is no official confirmation from Samsung as which devices will be powered by the new processor, but the company says that start mass production will start from August 2013.
