Nokia Lumia 520 and 521 To Not Support Glance Screen Feature

All other Windows Phone 8 Lumia models to enable this feature.

The highly anticipated GDR 2 update (dubbed Amber for Lumia series) for Windows Phone 8 has already started rolling out for some smartphones including the Samsung ATIV S and HTC 8X in some countries. However, the highest market share holder for Windows Phone 8, the Nokia Lumia series, is yet to receive the update with some exclusive tweaks. This update will bring a host of new features including activating the radio module in some smartphones, Bluetooth 4.0, Data Sense, and Glance Screen among others.

Lumia 520 and 521 (US version of Lumia 520) will be disappointed to know that the Glance Screen feature will not be available for their handsets as has been revealed by Nokia. This comes at a time when CEO Stephen Elop has been pressing hard on the success of this budget-friendly smartphone in countries such as India, China, and Thailand. These low price models have even been sold out at some places, giving a boost to the market share of Windows Phone 8.

The Finnish manufacturer mentions "hardware restrictions" to be the reason for these smartphones to be unable to support the Glance Screen feature. The Glance Screen allows the smartphone to display time and ringer mode on the screen without having to turn on the display. This feature would also allow to wake up the phone with just a double tap on the screen. This should improve battery life of smartphones with AMOLED displays as it would turn on specific pixels rather than the entire display, unlike LCD panels.

In some other news reported by WPCentral some users of HTC 8X have been experiencing some difficulty after receiving the GDR 2 update. They are not able to use or even restart the device and this happens only when playing music on the smartphone. The update for Lumia series is expected to arrive later this month or in early August.
