TrueCaller's Database Hacked: Why So Syrius?

SEA shows off critical data in plain text in a Twitter post to back its claim.

There were days when people would get back at their "enemies" by sharing numbers on public lavatories. But in the days of services such as Whatsapp , Skype, and TrueCaller, you don't need any foes, people are pretty much able to wash dirty linen in public by themselves. Of this list, one service that can cause the maximum damage probably is TrueCaller, which describes itself as "the world's largest collaborative phone directory". The popular service has been available on Android, iOS, Symbian, and Blackberry platforms and boasts of a well-stacked database. In fact, it even has an Unlist option to keep your number from flashing. Which effectively means, it curates two databases, and has your number anyway. And unfortunately it is also a victim of a latest hack. A report on E Hacker News suggests, that 7 databases have been hacked by Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), and the main database is said to be 450 GB large. The hackers posted the following tweet after breaking into the database.

The SEA has backed its claim by posting screenshots of the database with the password and other crucial details in plain-text. The database is also said to have access to over a million Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Gmail accounts, which makes this leak more damning. The report suggests that the group claimed an outdated WordPress system gave them entry into TrueCaller's admin panel.

Everything said and done, this one tweet pretty much sums up every user's sentiments.
