Votes Up: How Many Apps Do We Really Need?
84% people use less than 20 apps on their smartphones.
The Android, Apple, and WP8 devices are all trying to get ahead in the smartphone race. In a latest trend, people have started giving too much importance to the apps. Little wonder then, biggies like Apple are allowing zombie apps in their repositories just to swell the numbers. The app repositories are crucial, but that single factor can't override other aspects such as user-interface, performance, and build-quality. So when someone tells you that a particular phone is better only because it has access to several lakh more apps, it doesn't really mean anything, or does it? To know, we need to get an idea of how many apps people actually use. To crack this mystery, we put up a poll, and the results are interesting.
The results reflect the obvious: Games aside, people don’t really bother too much with apps. Of the total number of votes, a staggering 84% people use less than 20 apps on their handsets, in fact 57% of our readers use less than 10 apps on a regular basis. Now that is saying a lot, considering that Apple and Google boast about having 900,000 and 800,000 apps in its respective app stores.
Looking at the numbers, it's quite clear that users prefer quality over quantity. If you list out the top 50 apps, they're available on most of the major platforms. We say 'most', because a few popular services such as Instagram are yet to land on one major mobile OS (I'm looking at you Windows Phone). But that surely doesn't mean its repository is empty. So rather than going for a mad rush to play the catching up game, we'd advice Microsoft to concentrate on bringing these famous apps to users instead.
As for the users, don't bother looking at the total number of apps in the respective app stores. It is just a number. Rather, shortlist the apps that you frequently use or want to use, and then check if that or something similar is available on the platform you wish to jump on.
