Finally, Samsung Launches A Phone-Sized Phone — GALAXY S4 Mini
Despite having ‘S4’ in its name, the Mini hardly has anything in common with the original S4 in terms of hardware.
After flooding the market with oversized Grand and Mega phones, Samsung has rolled out a handset that fits in a normal-sized palm. Dubbed the GALAXY S4 Mini, this phone comes with Super AMOLED screen that offers impressive blacks. Pixel dimensions of 540x960 may sound underwhelming, but that’s good enough for a 4.3-incher. Despite having ‘S4’ in its name, the Mini hardly has anything in common with the original S4 in terms of hardware. True, the design is almost identical, and both the handsets feel plasticky. But then, this holds true for each and every GALAXY phone. The S4 Mini packs in a 1.7 GHz dual-core Krait processor and 1.5 GB RAM. For photography, there's an 8 megapixel camera. Other features include Wi-Fi, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, IR Blaster, and a 1,900 mAh battery. On the software front, the S4 Mini offers the latest Android 4.2.2 out of the box. Thanks to the TouchWiz customisation, you get many of the S4's interesting software tricks such as Sound & Shot, WatchON, and Group Play. If you haven’t heard of these features before, here’s a brief description:
Sound & Shot: As its name suggests, Sound & Shot lets you add audio to your photographs, so that you never forget what song was being played or what was being said at that moment.
WatchON: Thanks to its Infrared port, you can use the S4 Mini to control most TVs, home theatres, and cable set-top boxes.
Group Play: Using Group Play, you can wirelessly connect multiple S4 or S4 Mini phones to play music together. It can also be used for playing multiplayer games.
The GALAXY S4 mini comes in White Frost and Black Mist, and is priced at Rs 28,000. Makes me wonder why anyone would buy this phone when the good-old GALAXY S III, which comes with a better screen and more powerful hardware, is available for around Rs 25,000. Samsung has clearly missed a trick here, or are banking on their famed marketing prowess, making people believe that anything with a 4 in the name is better than one that has 3.
