Sony Lists 4K UHD Media Player For Sale In The US For $700
The FMP-X1 comes with 2 GB HDD, USB, and Gigabit Ethernet; India launch is not yet confirmed.
Sony has listed the FMP-X1 — its 4K UHD media player on its US online store. The device is scheduled to go on sale on 15th July. 4K UHD or 2160p is a term used for images with pixel dimensions of 3840x2160, which is four times that of 1080p. The company had shown off this media player at the CES 2013 in January this year. The flat cylindrical media player comes in black and sports an HDMI-out, USB 2.0 port at the rear, and a USB 3.0 port and SD memory card reader at the front. There is also a Gigabit Ethernet port, although there is no mention of Wi-Fi. A 2 TB HDD is present inside. It is not known if it will support 3D at that resolution as that would need twice the processing power as a normal 4K media player. The specs make no mention of 3D. While the company mentions that it will work with Sony's 4K UHD TVs, it should ideally work with any HD TV.
Sensing, and rightly so, that there is a lack of 4K UHD content out there at present, Sony has pre-loaded the player with 10 4K UHD movies: The Amazing Spider-Man, Bad Teacher, The Karate Kid, The Other Guys, Battle: Los Angeles, That's My Boy, Salt, Total Recall 2012, Taxi Driver, and The Bridge on the River Kwai. Additionally, there are several short independent films, shorts, and 4K galleries included to demonstrate the image quality with this new format.
Sony has pegged the price of the FMP-X1 at $700 (approx Rs 41,600), which is too steep in our opinion. While there is no word yet on whether or not it will be launched in India, it will be extremely difficult to sell it here at such a hefty price. If Sony doesn't correct the price, it will have to face stiff competition from Chinese media players that should also soon start supporting this upcoming high-definition video standard. Although we are not sure whether they can actually play 4K UHD content, we have already come across a few that come with a 2160p movie player.
