Yahoo! To Delete Inactive Accounts, Make Those Shorter IDs Available For Others

Users who haven't logged in to their email, need to do so before July 15 2013.

Yahoo will now be freeing up inactive user IDs that have remained unused for a period of 12 months or more, to provide short and memorable IDs for its new users. Yahoo! Mail which has been operational since 1997, will begin its process of freeing-up inactive/unused email addresses, which may constitute a substantial number of their 281 million users. Yahoo users who abandoned their accounts or rarely login, have one last chance to claim and retain their accounts. After 15th July 2013, such inactive user IDs would automatically go out of existence.

This way Yahoo's Tumblr blog says, users signing up for a new Yahoo ID after 15th July, can register short IDs based on their names or desired IDs. Since Marissa Mayer took over as CEO, Yahoo has seen redesigns and culling of many of its services.

After choosing a short ID, such new Yahoo users would need to check back in August, to discover which of their chosen IDs have been assigned to them. The company says that users would be able to use their "short" email IDs to gain access to various Yahoo services such as weather, news or even sports related coverage.

This drastic move by Yahoo signifies another desperate step to retain users, and not lose them to the social networking and Outlook/Gmail wave (Gmail now offers 15 GB free storage, Outlook offers unlimited mail space). However, cyber attackers may work round the clock in attempts to snag multiple "short" Yahoo email IDs, so the company may have enhanced its security measures.
