AMD Sparks Up The GHz Race With 5 GHz FX-9000 Series CPUs

Retains the existing 'Piledriver' architecture with FX-9590 at 5 GHz and FX-9370 at 4.7 GHz Max Turbo speed.

 

Today AMD introduced their latest addition to the FX family of CPUs, the FX-9000 series of processors. Claimed to be "the world's first commercially available 5 GHz processor", the FX-9590 boasts of a Max Turbo speed of 5 GHz. The FX-9370 is another addition to the series with a 4.7 GHz of Max Turbo speed. Both these processors are based on the same 'Piledriver' architecture with four module/eight core processor for the AM3+ platform.

The base clock speeds of these CPUs are not yet revealed, nor are the details of cache size and TDP (Thermal Design Power). However, both these processors are unlocked for overclocking and feature AMD Turbo Core 3.0 technology for optimising CPU performance. AMD was the first to cross the 1 GHz clock speed barrier in the year 2000 and was the first to introduce x86 based dual-core processors. And now it seems AMD is again sparking up the GHz race by introducing the first ever commercially available 5 GHz CPU. But as we have seen over the years, clock speed is not the only parameter that determines the overall performance of a CPU. We will have to wait and watch how much of a performance boost these impressive numbers can provide AMD with to catch up with their Intel counterparts.
