Google Confirms Tabbed-Inbox, Extends Feature To Android, iOS Apps

Offers support for up to five tabs, expected to roll out in the next few weeks.

Google has always steered clear of folders for its email service, and Gmail's latest upgrade doesn't bring back folders, at least not in the conventional sense. In a bid to offer a better organised inbox to its users, Google has rolled out a new look for the desktop, Android, and iOS versions of the service. Confirming rumours, the official blog post says that the new inbox will indeed sport five tabs to categorise emails.

The Gmail for Android 4.0+ and Gmail for iPhone and iPad apps will list the Primary mail ID when you launch the app, with easy navigation options to the other tabs. If you don't like the new look and are finding it hard to get used to it, you can turn off tabbed-email listings and opt for the classic view.

The new look will be rolled out over the next few weeks, starting with the desktop version on the web browser. We could confirm that at least a few people in India were already offered this new look as of today morning. To know if the update is available for you, click the Gear menu and select Configure Inbox under the Settings options. In the mean time, check out the video below to see how the new feature works:
