Google I/O: More Apps Come To Google Glass

The wearable technology that pairs up with Android devices is not open for retail yet.

The much-hyped Google Glass has seen its fair share of controversies but we haven't seen the glasses in the thick of any action yet. But at this year's I/O conference, Google's experimental (and expensive) wearable technology is getting a new lease of life, as more apps become available for the device.

These include services such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, CNN, Evernote, and Path. In a blog post Twitter said that users can share photos, see mentions, DMs, and tweets through the Glass. Facebook on the other hand just allows users to post pictures. ABC News also adds in its report that after Google+, the search giant will also bring its Hangout app along with more social features.

However, it wasn't all fun for Google at the I/O as far as the Glasses are concerned. TheVerge reports that at its Fireside Chat with the Glass Team session, several questions were raised with regards to the privacy of the device. Steve Lee, Glass' product director, said, "Privacy was top of mind as we designed the product. You'll know when someone with Glass is paying attention to you. If you're looking at Glass, you're looking up", implying that eye contact is essential for recording data via the Glass.

Charles Mendis, an engineer on the Glass team elaborated, "If I'm recording you, I have to stare at you — as a human being. And when someone is staring at you, you have to notice. If you walk into a restroom and someone's just looking at you — I don't know about you but I'm getting the hell out of there". Drawing that parallel with normal human behaviour may help reassure a few, but still doesn't help us believe that your data is safe with Google.

Currently in the development stage, the Explorer Edition of the Glass which was released to select users for $1500 (approx Rs 82,500) can be easily hacked (within certain bounds), and Google is going all out to ensure that it has the backing and support of the developer community.
